• High school diploma or demonstrated equivalent
• 1 year of experience in a supervisory position with responsibility of directing the work of others.
• Candidate must possess a valid Driver’s License, with no suspensions or moving violations within the last 3 years.
• A Certified Drivers Abstract is required to validate driving records.
Preferred Requirements:
• Bachelor degree.
• Basic skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
• 1 year of work experience in a transit (rail, bus, etc.) supervisory position
Additional Information:
• Qualified applicants must successfully complete and pass Drug and Alcohol Testing, Agility Testing and Background Screening.
• Relocation and per diem support are not available for this position.
• Candidate must be able to pass the Safety Trained Supervisor exam within the first year of employment.

Level Specific Responsibilities:
Field Supervision
• Supervises Light Rail Train Operators to maintain safe and reliable service by:
• Observing operators for alertness, physical agility and correct operation of the trains and stations
• Reminds operators of HBLR operating rules, procedures and instructions and sets expectations for compliance
• Assists Transportation Management with Rule Checks
• Coordinates with train operators to ensure that all systems are working correctly
• Facilitates resolution of any requests for help with equipment malfunctions
•In the event of a rules or safety violation or an emergency, the Assistant Train Master:
• Will need to take immediate and appropriate action to correct the situation to return the area or train to a safe environment.
• Provide a full written report about any incident to the Superintendent of Transportation
• Suggest an appropriate consequence to any violation with justification
• Maintain compliance of the Substance Abuse Policy by observing employees and watching for behaviors that may be an indication of violation of the substance abuse policy and then following approved guidelines for substance testing
• Provide excellent customer service to train passengers by responding to and investigating reported claims of injuries to passengers, assisting passengers to board or leave the train, including those needing direct assistance.
• Troubleshoots and assists Train Operators identify Light Rail Train maintenance issues which will include moving the Light Rail Vehicle from the main line to the yard.
• Operates the Shuttlewagon by itself and/or coupled to a Light Rail Vehicle
• Monitors activities of Maintenance of Way personnel and/or contractors during track outages, or when work is being done that could affect train operations. Watches for trespassers and has them escorted from the property.
• May act as the on-site incident coordinator in situations requiring outside emergency response.
• Provide on-site assistance to the Operations Control Center in the event of service delays.
• Prepares and submits daily activity and other reports to the Superintendent of Transportation.
• Other responsibilities as needed and assigned.
Operations Control Center
• Ensures the safe adherence of Hudson Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) train schedules.
• Governs and communicates train movement and train routing during normal modified schedules via the Integrated Control System and radio communication with Light Rail Vehicle Operators.
• Provides immediate internal and external communications to management and team members for accidents, incidents, or other unusual occurrences.
• Coordinates and communicates with NJ Transit fare inspectors to reduce service delays and promote on time service.
• Ensures the proper and timely collection, recording, and distribution of daily reports and other data.
• Other responsibilities as assigned.
