**Job Summary** The Traffic Control Room Lead Operator position is responsible for monitoring and reporting incidents on the 495 Express Capital Beltway and the 95 Express Lanes in Northern Virginia\. The ideal candidate will have previous experience as a Traffic Control Room Operator \(TCRO\) or Traffic Management Center \(TMC\) Operator, specialized experience and subject matter knowledge in traffic systems control, highway incident management, automated communication systems, the techniques of traffic information management and dissemination\.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary responsibility of this position is to oversee the use of the intelligent transportation system \(ITS\) devices and supervise Traffic Control Room Operators to search for and verify incidents, lane closures, monitor congestion and construction events\. The Lead Operator position provides quality assurance on the day to day handling of all events in the control room and reports directly to the Traffic Control Room Senior Coordinator\. The Lead Operator will act as the voice of the operations center when the Deputy Project Manager and Sr\. Coordinator are unavailable\.
Position requirements include:
+ Monitoring events and equipment status with closed circuit TV cameras \(CCTV\), safety service patrols and control center software\.
+ Managing and logging events and congestion using the customized windows based software, and ITS devices, both electronic \(e\.g\., website server, incident detection algorithms\) and in the field \(e\.g\., vehicle detection stations \(VDS\), CCTV cameras and Dynamic Message signs \(DMS\)\.
+ Coordinating and dispatching safety service patrols to incidents in a timely and efficient manner\.
+ Conducting the gate reversal activities to ensure that a timely and safe reversal occurs while ensuring that all gate interruptions are reported and documented\.
+ Detecting, confirming and tracking equipment faults affecting control room equipment \(e\.g\., central system, computers, CCTV monitors, and large screen display units\) and TMC system field equipment \(e\.g\., CCTV, VDS, DMS\)\.
+ Communicating with internal operations staff on all control room activities while conveying essential and timely incident data with external clients at regional traffic operations centers\.
Informing first responders of traffic related events involving injury and assisting with coordination of lane closures and diversion routes\.
**Minimum Requirements**
+ High School graduate with some college preferred, 1\+ years of general office experience
+ One \(1\) year experience in the operations at a Traffic Management Center or a similar facility
+ Must pass a personal background check
+ The ability to work alternate schedules, be on\-call \(nights, weekends and holidays\) and availability for short\-notice work assignments \(flexibility is a must\)
+ Must be detail oriented and demonstrate good problem solving ability
+ Understanding of ITS principles
+ Good interpersonal skills and professional demeanor
+ Ability to clearly communicate technical information in layman’s terms
+ Ability to write cohesive reports
+ Ability to coordinate real time activities and priorities
+ Knowledge and use of two\-way communications and disseminating information via other communication devices
+ Ability to navigate the current Traffic Management System \(TMS\) and follow protocols for operations that promotes efficiency and effectiveness
+ Direct experience with the day\-to\-day operations of a similar operations center
+ Proactive and effective ideas of improving performances, procedures, and protocols
+ Full\-range of physical mobility and visual acuity
+ Familiarity with local freeways and arterial roads
+ Effective written and oral communication skills
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Some college
+ Operational knowledge and skill in the use of Windows operating system, including Microsoft Word and Excel
+ Knowledge of Closed Circuit Television \(CCTV\)
+ Knowledge of Dynamic Message Signs \(DMS\)
+ Knowledge of Maintenance of Traffic \(MOT\)
