Job Description: URS provides engineering consultancy services associated with transport infrastructure (roads, rail and ports), heavy civil engineering, mining, industrial facilities, water transfer systems, dams, power infrastructure and tunnels. The Principal Structural Engineer based in Sydney will be involved with a number of multi-disciplinary projects throughout NSW and Australia.
The primary focus of the role will be to provide leadership and technical direction to a team of NSW based structural engineers and technical staff and to liaise with other managers within URS NSW offices as well as project and technical managers involved in delivering consulting services which have a structural component. This position reports to the NSW Transport & Infrastructure Director based in Sydney.
Responsibilities / Objectives
• Team leader within the broader URS NSW Engineering Group with particular responsibility for staff and delivering structural engineering consulting services
• Determine team staff, skills and technical requirements and provide recommendations and advice to the NSW Transport & Infrastructure Director for inclusion in planning processes
• Prepare proposals, design schedules, budgets and technical and commercial submissions for bid proposals associated with structural work; either as standalone bids or as part of wider project teams
• Undertake, design, review and manage structural project work, in the team environment, to satisfy each project scope of work. This shall include but is not limited to the following:
- Provide specialized knowledge, training, and experience in the engineering; analysis, design and construction of structures and structural elements associated with major infrastructure.
- Analyse and design structures that resist loads involving a significant static and dynamic loading, while fulfilling its functional requirements and structural safety, when subjected to all the loads it could reasonably be expected to experience.
- Analyse and design structures, in part, with respect to deflections or movements, fatigue of structural elements, cracking or failure of fixtures, fittings or partitions, or discomfort of occupants
- Analyse and design structures allowing for movements and forces due to temperature, creep, live loads, earthquake, wind, snow, vibration, and other live and dead loads
- Coordinate analysis and design with other professional’s designs, including architectural, geotechnical, civil, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, industrial systems and/or process designs
- Close integration with other geotechnical specialists to develop soil/ structure interaction methods of analysis and design
- Prepare documents suitable for design and construction, including; calculations, drawings, technical specifications, construction schedules and reports
- Perform constructability analysis to ensure structures are practically buildable within acceptable manufacturing and construction tolerances of materials, equipment and skill of available labour
- Calculate cost and determine feasibility of project based on analysis of collected data, applying knowledge and techniques of engineering, construction techniques and available materials
- Inspect construction sites to monitor progress and assesses conformance to engineering plans, specifications, and construction and safety standards
- May direct construction and maintenance activities at project site
- May use computer-assisted engineering and design software, and equipment to prepare engineering and design documents
- May analyse reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, tests, and aerial photographs on soil composition, terrain, hydrological and hydraulic characteristics, and other topographical and geologic data to plan and design project
- May be called on to analyse structural failures, conditions involving excessive loading, impact loading, fatigue failures and other forensic engineering investigations, and make recommendations and/or design remedial repairs to existing structures
• Review and manage project work in accordance with URS project management and quality management systems (QMS)
• Manage the customer interface including attending client meetings
• Establish technical peer networks with other senior professionals within URS and participate in Australia/global engineering and project development teams
• Manage the development of structural engineering standards within URS and ensure that all structural work is done in accordance with Australian standards and sound engineering principles
• Supervise and mentor technical engineering staff in accordance with URS policies
• Represent URS at industry related events to further promote and build URS structural engineering capability
