**Job Summary** Our Transportation team currently has a vacancy for a **Principal Engineer** with experience of bridge design, inspection, assessment and refurbishment schemes to join their already substantial Newcastle Structures team\.
The successful candidate will be either ICE or IStructE Chartered and will have proven assessment, design and project management experience delivering to quality, time and budget\. They will have experience of working as part of project teams including major project multidisciplinary teams developing a range of bridge and other associated structures scheme solutions from assessment, initial concept through to detailed design for implementation\. This will include rail, light rail and road schemes both in the UK and overseas\. The role will suit self motivated individuals looking to lead teams and to advance their career both technically and in project management in an expanding dynamic current structures team of 70\+ engineers and technicians\.
The Newcastle office has an established track record of successfully delivering bridge engineering schemes for more than 75 years mainly in the North East but also throughout the UK and overseas\. Our modern office has multi\-disciplinary transportation assessment and design capability in rail and highway schemes and works closely with other disciplines from Geotechnical, Environment, Transport Planning and Development Sectors\.
The team provides assessment, concept, feasibility, preliminary and detailed designs on a wide range of schemes, either as standalone bridge commissions or as part of multidisciplinary major projects\. Recently won projects include a major UK 5 year rail network infrastructure framework assessment contract and we are at present completing the design of the major dualling of the A1 in North Yorkshire\. In addition to the significant long term commissions on bridge assessment and inspection, principally in the rail environment, our initial assessment often leads to the requirement for the design of the refurbishment, strengthening or replacement\.
Newcastle staff have also provided support on major overseas commission in the Middle East and Ireland where the team here in Newcastle designed the superstructure steelwork for the Peace Bridge in Londonderry, Northern Ireland which has won numerous individual awards worldwide and which has recently been chosen as one of the 10 British Postal Stamps to represent bridge design\. In fact the Newcastle Office has been involved with either the design or assessment and refurbishment of 3 of the 10 bridges chosen\. Overseas opportunities are likely to occur although this position is intended to recruit for a Principal Engineer working in the Newcastle office but with the possibility of short term UK or overseas work should this be acceptable\.
Our clients are from the private and public sector and include long term Framework Agreements with numerous North East Local Authorities together with Design and Build commissions for many major Contractors\.
Our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national rail, highway and infrastructure improvements\. A selection of our current and recent projects includes:
• CAFA Rail Bridge inspection and assessment\. Long term commission following on from the previous similar CEFA and SAC commissions\. The sites are throughout the UK with the Newcastle team having ultimate responsibility for the Scotland, LNE and LNW routes working closely with our Glasgow, Birmingham, Altrincham, Bedford and Chesterfield offices\.
• A1 Leeming to Barton\. This is the final stage of the design of the capacity increase of the A1 from dual two lane to dual three lane motorway from Wetherby to Scotch Corner
• Nexus\. As part of a three consultancy framework for the multidisciplinary refurbishment, design of new road and rail crossings and permanent way for the £385m refurbishment of the Nexus METRO light rail network here in Newcastle\.
• Morpeth Northern Bypass\. All aspects of the design of the new Northern bypass of the Northumbrian town of Morpeth working in association with Carillion construction\.
• North East Procurement Organisation \(NEPO\) Framework\. The Newcastle office has been selected for all seven Lots tendered for on the framework and are carrying out Planning, highway design, structure design, multidisciplinary design for all of the local city and county councils using this procurement route\.
Job Responsibilities:
The appropriate level of technical and project management expertise is required in order that the Job / Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the necessary standard:
• Undertake / project manage rail and/or road bridge and associated structures engineering schemes from inspection and assessment, feasibility through to detailed design, taking responsibility for the contribution of Graduate Engineers and Technicians as appropriate\.
• Responsible for production through to client sign off of Technical Approval documentation
• Hands on technical design on road and/or rail structures
• Hands on assessment of road and/or rail structures
• Structural inspections and reporting
• Excellent technical and communication skills both verbal and written
• Client liaison
• Production of tenders including quality documentation and costings
• Project Management including programme and resource monitoring, quality control, technical management and delivery\.
• Mentoring graduate engineers in their progress to Chartership
**Minimum Requirements** • Experience in the assessment of rail and/or road projects\. Experience in both is not essential but would be advantageous\.
• Experience in working as part of a multidisciplinary team
• You will have high level technical skills in current inspection, assessment and design and be able to lead teams of graduate and senior engineers in such projects\.
• You will have worked with a variant of clients of both national and local authorities, together with major contractors
• You will be able to manage staff and project a strong ethos in the culture of Health and Safety awareness and compliance
• You will have a current driving license and be willing to travel throughout the UK to visit sites\.
**Preferred Qualifications** • You will have a relevant degree and will be a Chartered Engineer with strong post graduate experience on bridge and related structural inspection assessment and design schemes\.
