**Job Summary** Our Transportation team currently has a vacancy for a Principal Engineer in Highways with team management and highways technical experience, to work on local, national and international schemes from our Chelmsford, Essex offices in the South East\.
The successful candidate will join AECOM’s established South East highways business which continues to expand following several major project wins\. The successful candidate will have demonstrable highways experience, show leadership qualities and have experience of major highways design and project management\.
The highways business in the South East represents over 40 years of accumulated skills, experience and established culture in the delivery of all types of highway schemes; from major motorway improvements such as the A2/M2 widening in Kent to major highways junctions and links such as those connecting developer led schemes such as the London Gateway Port project in Essex\. Our modern offices in Chelmsford have good transport links and the teams have an established reputation for quality and delivery\. We are looking to enhance and enlarge these teams with people who have a sound technical background and share our enthusiasm and determination\.
Currently engaged on a number of interesting and challenging projects both locally and overseas there are a number of opportunities for people of all grades to be involved in the range of work secured and anticipated\. Recent and current projects in the UK include the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme, the London Highways Alliance Contract \(LoHAC\) in Central and North West London and High Speed Rail 2 \(Lichfield to Crewe\)\. Overseas projects include highway schemes in Russia, Finland, Turkey and the Expressways project in Qatar\. Our services offered to our clients include the full range and scope of highways work from inception to completion across all the key discipline areas\. We work on schemes from feasibility stage through the development phase and planning and DCO process, preliminary design, detailed design and site supervision\.
We have considerable experience of working with contractors on Design and Build schemes as well as working directly for clients, who come from the private and public sector\. Our client list includes Transport for London, Highways England, Suffolk County Council, Dubai Ports World, Jacksons and Carillion\.
Projects we have recently been working on in the South East include:
•LoHAC; highways schemes in North West and Central London, investigation through to detailed design\.
•A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement; client side design and advice for the UK’s most high profile road scheme\.
•Suffolk County Council; major projects within the County, which we have taken to planning and are now undertaking detail design and construction\.
•A1 Elkesley Bypass, Notts; Design and Build detailed design services for Carillion\.
•Qatar; Doha Expressway project and Contract 2; providing support specialist highways support to the local team\.
•HS2; highways support to this high profile rail project\.
Job Responsibilities:
The appropriate level of technical expertise is required in order that the Job/ Project Accountabilities listed below can be carried out to the expected standards\.
•Provide technical input, technical leadership and project management across a range of specialisms in the field of highway engineering
•Reporting to Associate Directors and Directors you will undertake a variety of tasks providing as an individual or through team effort, a range of design and written deliverables\.
•Show technical leadership and through experience, mentor and guide the skills of others in computer based applications and tasks including use of software such as MX, WinDES, and the Microsoft Office Suite of programmes including MSProject\.
•Undertake Project activities in line with Company Policy, including technical and commercial aspects, as appropriate to your grade\.
•Take a lead role on projects within particular skill area – e\.g\. drainage team leader, pavement design leader, geometric layout etc\.
•Plan, lead and undertake site visits, as required\.
•Plan and attend meetings – internal and external, as required\.
•Liaison with sub\-consultants and external parties, as required\.
•Participate as a team member on a number of levels, including; office discipline and project \.
•Be proactive and contribute to a safer work environment
**Minimum Requirements** •Able to offer experience and proficiency in two or more of the key areas;
\-project management or asset management
\-alignment design,
\-drainage design,
\-pavement design and refurbishment
\-signs and road markings,
\-safety barrier
\-asset inspection
•Management of design and delivery of highway maintenance schemes
•Experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment, operating across a matrix of projects\.
•Experience of preparing written work
•Experience of preparing for and attending meetings with clients and/or statutory consultees\.
•Experience of working with HE processes \(i\.e\. Project Control Framework and Collaborative Delivery Framework\) desirable
•Experience of working in the Design and Build sector particularly preparing tenders for contractors\.
•A highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills\.
•Full awareness of Current Health and Safety Legislation and how it is applied to the design process\.
**Preferred Qualifications** o A degree qualified civil engineer with strong experience, preferably working in a highways design environment in either new build or maintenance\.
o MICE, MCIHT membership status preferred\.
