Requisition Number: IE103700 Interest Category: Environmental/Sciences Interest Sub Category: Archaeology Job Title : Archaeological Field Technician Employment Category/Status: full-time Type of Position: Temporary Country: U.S. State: Virginia City: Newport News Minimum Requirements: • Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or related field • University-based archaeological field school or demonstrated equivalent combination of education, skills, knowledge, abilities and experience • Knowledge and understanding of equipment and technology used to perform recording of archaeological field data • Knowledge of basic field excavation techniques • Knowledge of basic archaeological laboratory techniques PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: • Extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels, bending, kneeling, standing, and lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 lbs. • Must have tolerance for working in outdoor environments, including prolonged walking or standing on various terrains in a wide range of weather conditions • Valid driver's license • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test Job Description: AECOM is seeking archaeological technicians for temporary work in the Newport News, Virginia area. Fieldwork is expected to start June 22 and will run six to eight weeks. The project will include Phase II and Phase III work. An archaeological technician conducts field or lab work with supervision from a field or lab director. He or she keeps records and maintains the relevant State Historic Preservation Officer documentation pertaining to archaeological resources. He or she provides regulatory compliance support for Federal, state, municipal and/or commercial clients. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: • Performs fieldwork such as test unit excavation, controlled surface collection, feature excavation, GPS data collection, and artifact recovery • Performs archaeological documentation such as completing field excavation forms and artifact bag lists, producing field drawings and maps, taking photographs, and recording GPS data • Provides logistical support to field directors (assembles and maintains equipment, organizes supplies and paperwork, etc.) • Performs lab work such as artifact washing, artifact labeling, and data entry • Complies with all AECOM safety standards to ensure a safe work environment for all • Works with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet AECOM quality standards AECOM is a premier, fully integrated professional and technical services firm positioned to design, build, finance and operate infrastructure assets around the world for public- and private-sector clients.
